Skeletal Anchorage

Gosford, Erina, Central Coast

Skeletal anchorage allows the orthodontist to control tooth movement with great precision. This is a temporary system which is designed to anchor some teeth while other teeth undergo difficult orthodontic movements. It can also make some previously limited movements possible, and help simplify complex movements.

Usually, they are titanium mini pins or plates that are inserted in the jaws. Where these devices are placed will vary from patient to patient, based on the movement the orthodontist needs to achieve. They are usually placed under local anaesthetic, but in some cases, a general anaesthetic is preferred, for example, if other procedures are to be carried out at the same time.
