CCO Patient Orthodontic Treatment in Terrigal

We want to share with you the Orthodontic journey of our 17-year-old patient from Terrigal.

He was referred to us by his general dentist because he wanted to close the gaps between his teeth.

Many people — both children and adults — naturally have a gap between their two upper front teeth. This gap, which is officially known as a diastema, ranges from barely noticeable to fairly significant. When children have half baby teeth and half adult teeth (generally ages 7-11), a diastema is exceptionally common and often expected. However, these gaps should close by the age of 14.

During his initial consultation, we found that he had congenitally missing upper lateral incisors. Maxillary lateral incisor agenesis (MLIA) is the most common congenitally missing permanent tooth condition in the maxillary anterior region (aesthetic zone), representing approximately 20% of all dental anomalies. In some families, congenitally missing lateral incisors is a trait that has been passed down from generation to generation. Other people are born without lateral incisors for reasons that are entirely unknown.

What is common among all people born without lateral incisors is that they can resolve their issues through orthodontic treatment, whether through traditional braces to close the space or through the creation of more space to accommodate tooth restorations.

For this patient, we did Canine Substitution, which involves using traditional metal braces to move the teeth in the mouth so that the canine teeth – the pointed teeth normally located adjacent to the lateral incisors – fill the gap where the missing lateral incisors should have been. In essence, the canine teeth were reshaped and placed restoration to become the lateral incisors. The other teeth, of course, also move into relatively optimal positions to ensure a strong, healthy bite free from gaps.

The Result

After two years of wearing braces, we closed the gaps and moved his upper canines to replace the missing lateral incisors.

Our patient was delighted with the result and now feels confident in showing off his new smile without the gaps!
