How to Prepare for Your Braces Appointment
Preparing for your braces appointment can be both exciting and a little nerveracking.
At Central Coast Orthodontics, we understand that taking this step towards a straight, confident smile is a big decision. Whether you’re getting braces for the first time or transitioning to a new phase of your orthodontic journey, being well-prepared can help make the experience as comfortable as possible. Let’s guide you through some tips to help you feel ready for your upcoming visit.
Prepare for your Appointment
When you arrive at Central Coast Orthodontics, you’ll settle in and let us know which braces colours you’ve chosen while asking any questions you might have. Your practitioner will begin by lightly cleaning your teeth to ensure they’re clean and ready for the braces to adhere properly.
Once your teeth are prepped, your orthodontist will bond the brackets on, using a special light to set them in place. After all the brackets are securely attached, we will insert the arch wires and add your chosen colours, ensuring everything feels comfortable.
Finally, our staff will provide you with important instructions on brushing, dietary adjustments, and what to expect moving forward. Rest assured, the entire process is usually smooth and painless, setting you on the path to your beautiful new smile!
Prepare for Discomfort
To ease this discomfort, over-the-counter pain relief medications like ibuprofen or paracetamol can be very effective (if there are no allergies). Sticking to softer foods like yogurt, mashed potato, scrambled eggs and smoothies etc will be more comfortable to eat.
This initial discomfort is a sign that your braces are doing their job, gently shifting your teeth into the ideal position. It’s a temporary phase, and many patients find that the discomfort subsides after a few days.
Prepare your Fridge
As you move forward, its crucial to avoid hard, brittle and sticky foods that can damage your braces. Foods like popcorn, crusty bread, nuts and chewy lollies can pose a significant risk of breaking brackets or wires which will require additional visits and possibly extend your treatment duration.
Habits like chewing ice and nail biting can also put damaging pressure on your braces. By making these dietary adjustments, you’ll help ensure your treatment
progresses smoothly and efficiently.
